Every year we hold a DIY at Home Summer Camp and one part of the day the kids are pulling an activity from the Time with Mom jar. I know, this is a post about a Bored Jar. Here is the deal, I’m lazy, so I just use the same sticks from the Time with Mom jar in a new jar named: Bored Jar. Two different jars, same sticks at different times. For example, if its a three day weekend it’s the Bored Jar. If it’s summer camp it’s the Time with Mom jar. You’re welcome.
You don’t need to go this far; my Bored Jar includes five categories. This practice just helps me with my need for organization and letting the kids know what I’m up for. For example, “go pick a purple polka dot stick.”
Here is what you’ll need right now to make a Bored Jar:
Jar – I like these
Large Popsicle Sticks – I used these
Washi Tape – Like this
Permanent Markers – I used these
Basics of a Bored Jar
Brain storm ideas for your Bored Jar. Remember, take it easy! You do not want this to become stressful. Now back to my OCD. Here are my five categories:
- Things to Make
- Outside Play Time
- Family Activites
- Fun with Food (try Rainbow Spaghetti)
- Quiet Time (aka, send them away!)
Here is an example. On each stick I color code the items with a piece of washi tape at the bottom and then write the ideas on the stick. Some ideas or names are super clever and I’m just not going to remember them, so I write notes on the back to remind me. One complicated example is Giant Bubbles, which is written on the front. On the back is the recipe: 12c H20, 1c dish soap, 1c corn starch, 2 TBL baking powder (sit 4 1 hr). Kiddy pool and hula-hoop optional. I do not want to go looking for it when it’s time to play. Just keep this in mind.
So, there you have it. Create some activities or sign up for some free ideas below, and get started! All you have to do is write them down and let the kids pull their choice out of the jar.
I hope this is fun! If you enjoyed this take a look at our Fun Kids Chore Jar. They get to “pick” their chore and it’s a surprise! Kids love it.
