Let’s go for a drive. I know you’ve been on this drive before just like you’ve tried to Overcome Your Frustration before; imagine: you are driving down a dark road. It’s dark outside and there is a leery fog hanging over your path. You know the kind of night I’m talking about. It is the one that will not be drivable without high beams and the road is barely visible still. You have to lean in to see the lines on the road for guidance. As you do so you can feel your body tensing up. Great, now it is starting to rain! All you want to do is focus, but you can’t seem to overcome the idea of being on this path much longer.
You turn down the radio to see the road better.
Now your chest is tight, and you feel stuck. You have to get to your destination, but you’ve never been on this road. It is scary and unpredictable to say the lease. Hell, you don’t even know how you got on this road. You just want to get off of it.
Now imagine the GPS just told you your trip has been extended by hours. You’re going to be stuck driving in these conditions for for much longer then you originally planned.
How do you feel?
You just want to to Overcome Your Frustration, right?
It sounds so easy. Just get off the road, but how? You’re not a victim here, expecting someone to swoop in and save you from this miserable drive, you just want to know when it’s gong to be over.
Then a call comes in and the person on the other end tells you they need you to pick them up. You’re exhausted, and that detour would take days. One more minute on this road is too long.
This fog that has moved in has been discovered to be caused from some natural disaster. You are going to have to take the road along the cliff riddled mountain, because the bridge was blown out during the disaster.
It gets worse. Now, faced with this reality of being on this highly unpleasant, and stress driven road, the passenger you picked up, the one you went out of your way to get, is insisting you just need to be positive.
Just Overcome Your Frustration
How do you feel right now?
Probably pretty shitty.
Probably even more tense then you did after reading the first paragraph. Now, imagine if you had to stay on this road indefinitely with this person insisting you will your way through it. Agggg.
Shit just got hopeless.
This is why it’s important to think about a future that you can truly sustain, not survive. Living the road described above would surely chip away at your soul, like being nibbled to death by ducks. The tension of this miserable future would stress you to death.
So, what are you going to do?
Face the reality for what it is. It’s scary, dark, dangerous, stressful, tense, unpredictable, and in general, miserable.
So why would you stay on it? No logical person would! So, why then, are you willing to stay on it?
Great, get off this miserable road.
You only have to be 51% sure you want to be on a different path to be successful in changing your course.
